Her action surprised the swordsman.  He stepped back and turned to attack but, she had fallen to the ground and rolled to the side.  In an instant, she was back on her feet attacking.  Her blade slashed through the darkness in his direction but, she was unable to see exactly where to strike.  She screamed, yelled and wildly stabbed at the black shadow and suddenly, a spark flashed between their blades.  For a moment, his cold emotionless features and eyes that showed no life, no compassion or mercy, were visible.  It was a frightening sight but Caryn’s continued her attack.

He swung his sword.  She slipped on the greasy black ground and fell.  The blade passed over her head without contact.  She rolled toward him and slashed at his legs.  Her blade made contact.  She felt it slice through something solid.  He faltered.  In an instant, she was back on her feet, still on the attack.

This man, or ghost, or whatever he had become was not used to seeing any light and his eyes were momentarily blinded.  She seized the opportunity and lunged at his throat.  Her dagger found its mark.  He choked and stumbled backward.  She pushed her advance and stabbed at his heart with deadly accuracy.  He stumbled again, still trying to swing the knight’s silver sword but her dagger continued to defend her.  The silver steel of the two blades continued to slam into each other, sparking and flashing as if they were about to explode.  More swinging, crashing, sparking and lightening spewed from their battle until the entire area was bright as day and Caryn was solidly on the offense.

She was screaming at him, stabbing him, stopping him from doing harm to her children.  He fell to his side and then to the ground, choking, gasping and dying.  Sparks snapped between his body and the sword as it fell from his hand and slowly dimmed to a yellow glow and then, to darkness.

Caryn was still screaming furiously as life left his body.  “No one will hurt my children!  No one, do you hear?  Now be gone with your hateful soul!”
